- Note that alcohol can increase the drowsiness caused by this drug.
- You should know that doxepin can cause angle closure galucoma (a condition in which fluid suddenly stagnates and cannot flow out of the eye causing a sudden increase in eye pressure which can lead to loss of vision). Talk with your doctor about an eye exam before you start taking this medicine. If you experience nausea, eye pain, vision changes, such as seeing colored rings around lights, and swelling or redness in or around the eyes, contact your doctor or seek emergency medical care right away.
Is the drug Doxepin safe for pregnant and lactating women?
Animal studies suggest that doxepin may be a risk to the fetus if consumed by pregnant women. However, the doctor may consider whether the benefits of this drug outweigh the risks, if the mother's condition is fatal if left untreated.
Always consult your doctor or midwife before taking any medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Doxepin dosage for depression and anxiety
For mild conditions:
- Initial dose: 25 mg per day in 1-3 divided doses.
- Maintenance dose: 25-50 mg per day in 1-3 divided doses.
For moderate conditions:
- Initial dose: 75 mg per day in 1-3 divided doses.
- Maintenance dose: 75-150 mg per day in 1-3 divided doses.
For severe conditions:
- Initial dose: 150 mg per day in 1-3 divided doses.
- Maintenance dose: 150-300 mg per day in 1-3 divided doses. The maximum single dose does not exceed 150 mg.
Doxepin dosage for insomnia
