Demeclocycline Drug Interactions

What should be known before using demeclocycline?

Demeclocycline is a drug that must be used under a doctor's supervision. Before using demeclocycline, tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to demeclocycline, tetracycline, minocycline, doxycycline, or any other medication.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist about prescription and nonprescription drugs, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products that you are using or will be using. Be sure to mention the following: antacids, anticoagulants ("blood thinners") such as warfarin (Coumadin), and penicillins. Demeclocycline reduces the effectiveness of some oral contraceptive medicines. Other forms of birth control medication should be used while using this medication.

Be aware that antacids, calcium supplements, iron products, and laxatives that contain magnesium interfere with demeclocycline, making them less effective. Take demeclocycline 1 hour before or 2 hours after antacids (including sodium bicarbonate), calcium supplements, and laxatives containing magnesium. Take demeclocycline 2 hours before or 3 hours after taking iron and vitamin products that contain iron.

Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had diabetes or kidney or liver disease. Also tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while using demeclocycline, contact your doctor immediately. Demeclocycline can be harmful to the fetus.

If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about using demeclocycline.

Plan to avoid unnecessary or prolonged sun exposure and wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Demeclocycline can make your skin sensitive to sunlight.

You should know that when demeclocycline is used during pregnancy or in infants or children up to 8 years of age, it can cause permanent staining of teeth. Demeclocycline should not be used in children under 8 years of age unless your doctor determines that the patient really needs it.

Is demeclocycline safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women?

Demeclocycline is a drug that has been put into pregnancy category D by the Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) in America, aka "there is evidence of risk."

Animal studies have shown evidence of fetal toxicity and teratogenic effects associated with tetracycline use. Demeclocycline flows through the placenta at an average concentration of 65% of the maternal blood level. There are no research data on human pregnancy. However, congenital defects associated with tetracycline use have been reported, including a toxic effect on bone formation.

When used during tooth development (other than during pregnancy) tetracyclines can cause permanent gray-brown discoloration of teeth and enamel hypoplasia.

Demeclocycline should be given with extreme caution during pregnancy. Demeclocycline is only recommended for use during pregnancy if alternatives are not available and if the benefits outweigh the risks. Pregnant patients or patients who have recently become pregnant while using demeclocycline should be informed about the potential harm to the fetus.

There are no data regarding the excretion of demeclocycline into human milk. However, tetracyclines are excreted into human milk in small amounts. The tetracycline concentration in milk averages 0.6 mcg / mL when the blood level is around 1.2 mcg / mL.

There is a theoretical risk of tooth staining and inhibition of bone growth, although they are rare. In one study, tetracycline levels were undetectable in breastfeeding infants. Tetracyclines, and other related drugs, are considered suitable for breastfeeding mothers by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Because of the potential for serious side effects in a nursing infant, the manufacturer recommends that a decision should be made to stop breastfeeding or stop using the drug considering the importance of the drug's benefit to the mother.
