What drug Deferasirox?
What is deferasirox for?
Deferasirox is a drug used to treat high iron levels in the body caused by repeated blood transfusions. Deferasirox can also treat high iron levels in patients with blood disorders that do not require blood transfusions such as thalassemia (non-transfusion dependent thalassemia).
Blood transfusions are often required for several types of blood disorders, such as sickle cell disease and anemia. Blood transfusions have several benefits, but they can cause the body to store too much iron.
In patients who receive multiple blood transfusions and patients with non-transfusion dependent thalassemia but have high iron levels, excess iron can build up in multiple organs. This triggers various problems such as heart failure, liver disease and diabetes. These risks can be reduced by removing excess iron.
Deferasirox is a drug class of iron chelating agents. These drugs work by attaching to iron and helping the body remove excess iron through urine or feces.
