Long menstruation and little blood loss, what, yes, the cause?

On average, you will bleed about 30-50 mL of blood during one menstrual cycle. If your menstrual cycle is normal, it can be anywhere from 3-7 days long, with between 21-35 days between each cycle. Because everyone's body is different, there are some women who have a little menstrual blood with varying duration. This raises a question, does a little menstrual blood cause prolonged menstruation in some women?

What causes low menstrual blood?

In general, low menstrual blood is nothing to worry about. Menstruation can be different every month, both in the amount of blood that comes out and the duration of the period itself. Some women even naturally produce less blood than normal amounts.

The causes can be various, for example:

  • age over 30-40 years
  • weight gain or loss
  • the body does not release an egg (anovulation)
  • certain medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (polycystic ovary syndrome / PCOS), conditions related to the thyroid gland, narrowing of the cervix (cervical stenosis), thickening of the uterine wall, or uterine fibroid disease
  • stress

In addition, conditions involving hormones can also cause menstrual blood to be low. You are more likely to develop this condition if you are pregnant, use birth control that affects hormones, or have certain diseases in your reproductive organs that interfere with the function of hormones related to menstruation.

Then, if a little menstrual blood will cause the duration of menstruation to increase?

The duration of your period is long if it lasts outside the normal time span, which is about more than 7 days. However, there's no need to panic, there are a number of things that can cause the duration of your period to lengthen. Here are some of them:

1. You are ovulating

This means that the ovaries (ovaries) are releasing an egg. Ovulation is supposed to occur before menstrual bleeding, but sometimes the hormone estrogen can start early, causing you to bleed earlier.

2. Use of KB

Birth control pills, injections, implants, or (spiral) containing hormones can affect your hormonal system, changing the duration of your period. Certain types of birth control may not suit you and cause your periods to lengthen.

3.Polycystic ovary syndrome (Polycystic ovary syndrome / PCOS)

Apart from causing less menstrual blood, PCOS can also increase the duration of menstruation. This condition is characterized by the growth of a number of cysts on the ovaries. If left untreated, PCOS can inhibit egg maturation and disrupt the hormonal system, thereby contributing to irregular menstrual cycles.

4. There are polyps or fibroids in the uterus

Uterine polyps and fibroids are common conditions in women. Both can cause changes in the space in the uterus and lead to increased blood flow. Your body detects something foreign in the uterus and tries to expel it. As a result, you may bleed longer than you should.

In retrospect, hormonal changes in the body play an important role in the amount of menstrual blood that comes out and the duration of menstruation. These changes can cause less menstrual blood, longer menstrual periods, or both at the same time. However, a little menstrual blood doesn't necessarily make the duration longer.

Although there are many medical conditions that cause hormonal changes, you don't need to panic if you have them. The most important thing is to keep an eye on the various changes in your body and immediately consult a doctor if your menstrual irregularity feels bothersome. It is also useful for early detection of other, more serious medical conditions.
