Try to pay attention to how your face looks in the mirror. Are the eyes, ears, eyebrows, nose, and mouth in a proper position and parallel to each other? If you find that the position of one of the organs looks different, it means that you have an asymmetrical face. Actually, why would anyone have this asymmetrical face? Is there any way to fix it?
What causes unsymmetrical face shape?
Sometimes, a person has a higher position of the right ear than the left, the shape of the nose appears sharper on only one side, so that the structure of the right and left jaw is different. If you have any of these traits, it means that your face is asymmetrical.
But don't worry just yet, almost everyone has an asymmetrical face. It's just that, in some cases there are asymmetrical facial shapes that are more noticeable than others.
This can be caused by several things, ranging from mild to serious, namely:
1. Genetic
Family members who have asymmetrical (asymmetric) faces can pass on this face shape to other family members. So, pay attention if you have a shape that is not symmetrical, does anyone in your family also have it? Although it may be in a different form.
2. Smoking
A 2014 study published in the Plastic Reconstructive Surgery Journal found that the chemicals in cigarettes can actually be a contributing factor to facial asymmetry.
3. Changes in tooth structure
Having used dentures, extracted teeth, put on dental veneers, and other oral and dental procedures can affect the shape of your face, especially your jaw. That is why, sometimes the procedure can affect the shape of the teeth so that they are not symmetrical.
4. Age
Believe it or not, as you get older, the risk of facial asymmetry increases too. Don't worry, because this is a natural part of aging.
The reason is, although bone growth usually stops at the end of adolescence, cartilage can continue to grow into adulthood. In other words, the actual ears and nose will still grow and change with age.
5. Injury
Having had an accident that resulted in injury to your face is one of the causes of facial asymmetry. Whether it's because of a broken nose, changed teeth position, a collided jaw, and so on.
6. Bell's palsy
Bell's palsy is a condition when the facial nerve is paralyzed due to a disturbance in the peripheral nerves that are supposed to control the muscles on one side of the face. This is what causes a change in the shape of one side of the face, making it different from the other side. As a result, your face shape appears asymmetrical. The facial changes in this disease are usually temporary.
7. Stroke
In other cases, asymmetry of the face can be caused by a stroke. Symptoms of a stroke usually make one or both sides of the face paralyzed, so it can't function as it should.
8. Torticollis
Torticollis or crooked neck refers to a condition in which the position of the neck muscles is abnormal. This makes the muscles on one side of the neck much tighter or stronger than the other side. That is why sufferers often tilt or change the position of the neck.
Can the asymmetry of the face be corrected?
If this asymmetrical facial condition is purely due to heredity or other things that are not classified as dangerous to your health, then there is no need to take any treatment to fix it. Even sometimes, this asymmetrical facial structure is considered unique and has its own charm.
However, if there is a dangerous risk lurking in your health because you have an asymmetrical face, some surgical procedures may be further considered.
1. Face filler
A facial filler is a cosmetic procedure that is performed by injecting special fluids into several parts of the face to make it appear more volume. Although this one treatment cannot last forever, at least it can help improve facial asymmetry for a while.
2. Facial implants
If your facial asymmetry is caused by differences in the skeletal structure of the bones, implants may be a viable option. This treatment can usually last quite a long time, by inserting a special material in the form of silicone, gel, plastic, or other parts of the face that you want to repair.
3. Rhinoplasty
It is different if the cause of your facial asymmetry is a broken or bent nose. In this case, rhinoplasty surgery is usually recommended to make the bone structure of your nose look more symmetrical.
This operation can also be used to sharpen the nose, improve breathing difficulties due to the nose shape that is not ideal, as well as correct congenital defects.
