Restricted food and drinks during fever
1. Energy drinks
Most of the energy drinks inevitably contain added sugars, which serve as energy for athletes. But when you have a fever, this sugar content also causes inflammation of the immune system. Therefore, it's good to avoid drinks that contain high sugar. It is better to consume mineral fluids through water, fruit, vegetables and warm soup to prevent the fever from getting worse.
2. White bread
White bread is one of the foods that is easy to increase blood sugar levels. Why avoid plain bread when you have a fever? When you have a fever, the body will increase the level of inflammation if the body consumes foods containing sugar. In addition, plain bread also increases body molecules called cytokines to get out more.
3. Ice cream
When fever, sometimes the tongue wants to taste various foods to restore it mood self. It is not uncommon for ice cream to be one of the coveted food targets when having a fever. Unfortunately, the combination of solid fat and sugar in ice cream is nothing compared to the cool and soothing taste of your throat.
Then, the combination of body inflammation and feeling cold will overload the immune system. Instead, try eating plain, low-fat yogurt with fresh fruit to satisfy your sweet tooth when you have a fever.
4. Candy
Eating candy during a fever will only stimulate inflammation and weaken the immune system. A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that sugar reduces the effectiveness of white blood cells by reducing their ability to destroy bacterial cells in the body. Meanwhile, eating candy during the flu or cold can make the body more susceptible to other bacterial infections.
5. Fried foods
One of the dietary restrictions when having a fever is indeed hard to refuse for most people. Yes, fried foods such as various fried foods, fried chicken, fried eggs and others are indeed delicious. But unfortunately that's where most of the solid saturated fat lies.
According to a 2014 review paper from the National Institutes of Health, excess saturated fat can confuse an important defense in the immune system, called DPT. This confusion can lead to inflammation, which suppresses the immune system excessively, making it difficult for the body to fight off the virus that causes infection.
6. Meat
Even though meat contains protein and zinc, meat is one of the fever taboos that should be avoided. The reason is, fatty meat can increase inflammation and suppress the immune system. Instead, choose seafood or traditional chicken soup to replace meat and the body can still get protein and zinc.
