During the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for ventilators in Indonesia increased. It's just that, Indonesia's ventilators depend on imported procurement, while supplies from abroad are also being hunted by other countries which make the price even more expensive.

This condition encourages the nation's children to innovate. They are trying to design and develop a local ventilator. In about 3 months, Indonesia already has 5 ventilators made by the nation's children that have passed the test and are ready to be produced.

Indonesia lacks ventilators for handling COVID-19

The World Health Organization (WHO) says some COVID-19 patients only develop mild symptoms. However, for others this infection can cause lung damage and severe respiratory problems.

For patients who have severe symptoms, a ventilator can save their lives. Especially patients who have comorbidities or who are elderly.

A ventilator is a machine that helps the patient breathe. When a patient needs ventilator assistance to breathe, the doctor will perform an intubation, which is inserting a kind of tube (endotracheal tube) from the mouth to the throat.

Then the tube will be connected to the ventilator. The ventilator will regulate the process of inhaling and exhaling the patient. This machine will pump air and deliver oxygen to the patient's lungs.

A ventilator is a machine that cannot be made quickly. Currently, ventilators are in great demand around the world and their availability is very limited.

There is no open data regarding the availability of ventilators in Indonesia at this time, especially for handling COVID-19 patients.

From the data compiled by Katadata, it was noted that the availability of ventilators in Indonesia was only 8.4 thousand units as of March 2020. Meanwhile, the COVID-19 Task Force projects the need for ventilators for handling COVID-19 in Indonesia to reach 29.9 thousand units.

Various ventilators made by the nation's children

So far, Indonesia's ventilators depend on imported products. Meanwhile, supplies from abroad are currently being hunted by all countries, making the price even higher.

The nation's children are encouraged to innovate by designing and developing local ventilators. In about 3 months, Indonesia already has 5 ventilators made by the nation's children that have passed the test and are ready to be produced.

"Imagine, research and innovation that are usually proposed to be carried out at least in one budget year, this is only in a matter of three months, has produced innovation products of high quality, extraordinary and very much needed by the Indonesian people, which at the same time, other nations are also are competing to make it, "said Minister of Research and Technology Bambang Brodjonegoro, Saturday (20/6).

Here are 5 ventilators made by the nation's children that have passed the test and received certification from the Health Facility Security Center (BPFK) of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia.

1. COVENT-20, a ventilator made by the University of Indonesia for the treatment of COVID-19

Dock. University of Indonesia

COVENT-20 is a ventilator collaboration of researchers from the University of Indonesia, Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Engineering. This is a type of Local Transport Ventilator which is easy to carry and can be used in an emergency.

This ventilator has two uses, namely the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) mode and Continuous Mandatory Ventilation (CMV).

CPAP mode is operated on conscious patients to help carry oxygen to the lungs and reduce the need for intensive care in the ICU. CMV mode is operated on an unconscious patient to provide full respiratory support (taking over the patient's respiratory function).

While undergoing the trial phase, UI collaborated with the Health Polytechnic of the Ministry of Health Jakarta II, Department of Electrical Engineering, Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM), and the Jakarta Friendship Center General Hospital.

COVENT-20 passed human clinical trials on 15 June 2020 and is ready for mass production. For the initial stage, the University of Indonesia plans to produce 300 units of COVENT-20 ventilators to be distributed to COVID-19 referral hospitals.

2. Vent-I, a ventilator made by ITB

Ventilator Vent-I is the result of collaboration between the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Padjadjaran University (UNPAD) and the Salman Mosque Trustees Foundation ITB.

Vent-I is a ventilator that has the main function of CPAP, which is a breathing apparatus for patients who are conscious and can breathe on their own, not for ICU patients.

This ventilator has passed the test on April 21, 2020 and is ready to be produced for free distribution to COVID-19 referral hospitals throughout Indonesia. The total production target for ventilators is between 800-900 units.

Production of Vent-I is carried out in collaboration with the aircraft industry company PT. Indonesian Aerospace.

3. GERLIP HFNC-01 oxygen therapy device

The Indonesian Institute of Sciences in collaboration with PT. Gerlink Utama Mandiri has successfully developed a high flow oxygen therapy device or high flow nasal cannula/ HFNC.

"This tool (HFNC) is for COVID-19 patients at an early stage if the patient is still in a state of being able to breathe on his own. This tool prevents the patient from failing to breathe and does not have to be intubated using an invasive ventilator, ”explained the Chair of the Industrial Automation Research Group of the Electric Power and Mechatronics Research Center (Telimek) LIPI Hendri Maja Saputra.

GLP HFNC-01 has passed the test and has a medical device distribution permit from the Ministry of Health from 17 June 2020.

4. BPPT3S-LEN, a ventilator made by BPPT

BPPT makes emergency breathing apparatus (emergency) based on Ambu-Bag (air bag) and CAM which is named BPPT3S-LEN. This machine is the result of collaboration with PT. LEN Industri, namely a government-owned industrial electronic equipment company.

5. DHARCOV-23S, a ventilator made by BPPT

BPPT also makes another type of ventilator called DHARCOV23S. This is a ventilator with operating mode Continuous Mandatory Ventilation (CMV) based on pneumatics. Namely a ventilator is useful in unconscious patients to provide full respiratory support.

DHARCOV23S is an innovation from the collaboration between BPPT and PT. Dharma Precision Tools, a company that produces various types of cutting tools.

The production target for DHARCOV-23S is 200 units which will be completed by the end of June 2020. The price of the five ventilators made by this nation is certainly lower than the price of imported ventilators. The selling price ranges from IDR 10 to 100 million.
