Being a student means that you must be ready to be busy with a busy class schedule, a pile of tasks that seem endless, invitations to join organizations here and there, to thesis guidance or KKN. If you can't manage and balance your college life well, this feeling of being overwhelmed can lead to stress. If allowed to continue, stress will not only affect your mood and health, but also your academic performance. It's good to immediately find a good way to deal with stress so that you can be ready again to wade through the busy life on campus.
Various ways to deal with stress for college children
1. Get enough sleep
J. David Forbes, MD, an expert in the field of stress management states that no matter how busy and dense your daily activities are, you still need to take the time to get enough sleep.
Lack of sleep makes your brain unable to work efficiently, making it difficult for you to concentrate, focus your attention, find it difficult to remember or learn new things, and make decisions. A number of these things can cause you to be unable to understand the content of the courses presented during class.
Plus, not getting enough sleep can make it easier for you to get sick. Try to get seven to eight hours of adequate sleep each night. The reason is, stress itself is a side effect that most commonly occurs as a result of lack of sleep.
2. Eat nutritious foods
College children are synonymous with eating fast food or instant food, in order to save monthly money. Even so, frequent eating junk food will endanger your mental and physical health.
Fast food has minimal nutrition, so it actually lowers the body's energy. A body that is not fit is more prone to stress. Once stress has plagued you, you will tend to be blinded by your emotions and go back to eating junk food again because you feel that it's the only food that is easy to get.
So, as much as possible try to keep eating healthy foods even though you are busy in college. Eating healthy food doesn't have to be expensive, you can outsmart it by going to the market during holidays to buy vegetables and fruit. Then, make simple dishes at the boarding house which are certainly more nutritious. Cook yourself can even help save your monthly expenses.
3. Exercise regularly
One easy and inexpensive way to deal with stress is by exercising regularly. It doesn't take long. In fact, exercising lightly for 10 minutes every day can actually help relieve stress and maintain a healthy body.
The simplest sport you can do is walk. If you live in a boarding house close to campus, try walking. In addition, you can also take advantage of manual stairs instead of taking the elevator when changing classes. During holidays, you can go to do morning exercises around campus or go swimming.
4. Do not force yourself to participate in a myriad of activities
Joining organizations here and there as well as participating in UKM doesn't hurt to fill your spare time. You really need to take advantage of your college days to become an active student. However, you also need to know your limits. Don't go crazy taking on all the activities that in the end make you unable to do it yourself.
Remember, activities are important but maintaining health is more important. Why do you take on a myriad of activities but only end up making you stressed out by being overwhelmed and getting sick?
It's better to be wise to choose activities that you can only do if you can. It doesn't have to be too much so you can focus on being able to contribute to the maximum.
5. Indulge occasionally
When feeling bored and tired with a myriad of very busy activities, try to pamper yourself on the weekend. Going to the salon, karaoke with friends, watching movies, or going to places that you enjoy can be an effective stress-coping method. There is nothing wrong with pampering yourself every now and then, you know!
Going through the lecture period does not mean keeping yourself busy only with academic activities. You still need entertainment to relax your mind. A relaxed mind without a burden can help increase your productivity the next day.
In addition to the five methods above, you can also spend a moment with loved ones who can make you calm and laugh for a moment, forgetting about stressful daily routines.
