Not all pregnant women need to be induced during labor. This procedure is generally targeted at stimulating uterine contractions from expectant mothers who do not show signs of delivery after 2 weeks of their due date, or for those whose pregnancies are at high risk so that labor should be hastened. This method is actually fairly safe, but there are still side effects of labor induction that you should know and discuss with your obstetrician.
What are the side effects of labor induction?
Even though it is considered safe and can even prevent the risk of harm to the mother and baby, this procedure still has side effects that you should watch out for.
1. Increases the risk of giving birth to a cesarean section
The induction process will stimulate the uterus to contract so that the amniotic fluid breaks. Unfortunately, not all mothers are able to go through this process smoothly. Yes, there are mothers who still find it difficult to give birth normally so that a caesarean section must be replaced.
Caesarean section in labor induction is also often chosen when the position of the baby is not possible to be born normally because it can be bad for the baby.
2. The risk of health problems in babies
Generally, labor induction is performed earlier than the estimated day of birth (HPL). This condition can bring about side effects of labor induction in the form of health problems in the baby. For example, difficulty breathing and a liver that is not mature enough to do its job, so it will actually increase the level of bilirubin in the baby's blood.
As a result, the skin and eyes of the baby turn yellow or what is known as jaundice. This condition can still be treated until it is cured, but your little one will have to spend more time in the hospital.
3. Increase the risk of infection in infants
While in the mother's stomach, the baby is protected by amniotic fluid. That is why, if after the mother's water breaks but the baby does not come out, it will make the baby susceptible to infection in the womb. Nothing else can protect the baby from exposure to the outside environment, so that the germs that cause infection will easily enter.
4. Bleeding after childbirth
In some cases, the induced labor can lead to the uterine muscles having difficulty contracting properly after childbirth (uterine atony). This condition eventually resulted in the mother experiencing serious bleeding.
5. There is a risk of making the uterus tear
The stimulation of labor induction is usually carried out with the help of drugs. This option is considered unsafe for mothers who have previously had a cesarean section or other operations performed on the uterus. Because there is a risk of experiencing a uterine rupture (uterine rupture).
