Generally, hair that grows like fine hair only. The body has hair follicles and oil glands, including around the nipples and there is always the potential for hair growth. So is it normal for that to happen? What causes hair on the breasts?
Growing hair on the breast is normal, really
If you suddenly see fine hair growing around the nipples, don't worry. This is normal. There is nothing to worry about the appearance of fine hair around your nipples as this is not a symptom of a particular disorder. The presence of hair follicles around the nipples is normal and usually appears during puberty.
Why can hair grow on the breasts?
1. Hormonal changes
The increase in the female hormone testosterone can be the cause of the appearance of fine hair around your nipples. This hormone often spikes in young women around puberty, which causes fine hair to grow in many places, including around the nipples.
Women experience the highest levels of testosterone in their late teens to 20 years of age. You can visit your doctor to measure the testosterone levels in your body.
2. Pregnant
The fine hair that grows around the nipples can be a side effect of your pregnancy. During pregnancy, your body's hormones increase which causes hair to grow faster and fall out less easily. After pregnancy, your hormones will return to normal and this additional hair will fall out. So remember this hair around the nipples is only temporary.
3. Medicines
Taking certain drugs can also cause excessive hair growth, such as testosterone, danazole, anabolic steroids, glucocorticoids, cyclosporine, minoxidil, and phenytoin.
4. Hirsutism
Hirsutism is caused by an increase in male hormone levels which can also lead to other male features such as a deeper voice, muscular shoulders and excessive hair growth on the breasts, upper lip, chin and back. Acne, irregular menstrual periods and loss of femininity are also effects of hirsutism.
5. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) or commonly known as polycystic ovary syndrome is a problem with the balance of female hormones. When a woman has PCOS, the levels of the female sex hormone, estrogen and progesterone, are out of balance. Changes in one hormone can trigger other hormones, resulting in other changes.
One of them is causing the growth of fine hair in certain areas, including the nipples. If you think that you have PCOS, consult your doctor immediately for a proper diagnosis.
