Various complications of sinusitis
One of the complications that are often encountered in patients is the reduced ability of the nose to smell. This can occur due to blockage or nerve damage to the sense of smell. Well, even though this is a fairly rare case, there are several types of complications that you should be aware of.
A study was conducted on patients suffering from sinusitis and received treatment at Chiang Mai University Hospital from 2003 to 2012. Well, in this study, these patients were grouped into three types of complications, namely:
1. Local complications
These complications include cellulite and abscesses on the face, osteomilitis (bone infection), and mucocele (lumps in the mouth). Patients who experience this condition can occur before and after surgery. Usually, this complication begins with the patient's nasal congestion.
2. Orbital complications
These types of sinusitis complications are further divided into five parts, namely:
- Edema, a buildup of fluid in certain parts of the body
- Orbital cellulitis, eye pain due to inflammation of the eyeball tissue
- Cavernous sinus thrombosis (TSC) or blood clot that blocks a blood vessel in the brain and is located behind the eye socket.
3. Complications in intracranial
Complications of this type are divided again into:
- Meningitis
- Brain abscess
- Intracerebral abscess
- Dural sinus thrombosis (a blood clot pooling inside a vein in the brain).
Well, from these studies it was found that the most common complications of sinusitis were orbital complications or those related to the sense of sight. This condition can occur in both children and adults.
