What is Lubiprostone for?
This drug is used to treat certain types of constipation (chronic idiopathic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome with constipation). Chronic idiopathic constipation has unknown causes and is not due to diet, other illnesses, or drugs.
Lubiprostone is also used to treat constipation caused by narcotic (opiate type) drugs in people with ongoing disease due to medical conditions other than cancer. This medication can improve symptoms such as bloating and abdominal discomfort, improve the texture of the stool, reduce spasms, and resolve bowel movements. Lubiprostone belongs to the drug class of aschloride channel activators. It works by increasing the amount of fluid in your intestines which makes bowel movements smoother.
How do you use Lubiprostone?
Take this medication by mouth with food and water as directed by your doctor, usually twice daily. Late for the whole drug. Immediately without crushing or chewing. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
