Loud sounds will activate the sympathetic nervous system in the brain that is still "asleep". This condition is read by the brain as a threat because the body is forced to "wake up prematurely", forcing the brain to produce more stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline than usual. Decker thinks that a quiet alarm sound is more suitable for waking us up because it allows the brain to "wake up" gradually, releasing stress hormones too gradually. In the end, we wake up with mood which is better because the body is better prepared to accept the effects of these stress hormones.
