Chymotrypsin is a proteolytic enzyme that is obtained from extracts of bovine pancreas. Enzymes themselves are substances that speed up certain chemical reactions in the body.
This medication is used orally or by injection to reduce redness and swelling associated with a pocket of infection (abscess), ulcers, surgery, or injury. In addition, this drug is also used to help loosen mucus in asthma, bronchitis, lung disease, and sinusitis.
This medication is also sometimes inhaled or applied to the skin (used topically) to relieve pain and inflammation from wounds. Chymotrypsin is often used after cataract surgery to reduce damage to the eye.
