What is Biperiden for?
Biperiden is a drug to treat Parkinson's disease and disorders that resemble Parkinson's. Biperiden is used to treat certain side effects (such as sudden movement) caused by certain drugs. Biperiden can also be used for other conditions according to the doctor's instructions.
Biperiden is an anticholinergic and works by correcting chemical imbalances that cause Parkinson's type disorders.
What are the rules for using Biperiden?
Follow the rules given by your doctor or pharmacist before starting treatment. Check the label on the package for precise dosing instructions.
Biperiden can be used with or without food. If stomach upset occurs, use it with food to reduce stomach irritation.
How do I save Biperiden?
This medication is best stored at room temperature, away from direct light and damp places. Don't keep it in the bathroom. Don't freeze it. Other brands of this drug may have different storage rules. What is the Biperiden dosage for adults?
- Dosage for Parkinson's disease: 2 mg orally 3-4 times daily, dose can be titrated up to a maximum of 16 mg per 24 hours
- Dose for extrapyramidal reactions: Neuroleptic-induced: 2 mg orally 1-3 times a day

Side effects
What side effects may occur due to Biperiden?
Common side effects include dry mouth, blurred vision, drowsiness, euphoria or disorientation, urinary retention, dizziness when standing, constipation, agitation, disturbed behavior.
Cases of generalized choreic movement have been reported in Parkinson's patients when biperiden was added to carbidopa / levodopa. A decrease in rapid eye movement (REM) during sleep, characterized by an increase in REM latency and a decrease in the percentage of REM sleep, has been reported. There are usually no significant changes in blood pressure or heart rate in patients given the parenteral form of ACINETONE (biperiden). Mild postural transient hypotension and bradycardia may occur. These side effects can be minimized or prevented by slow injection. There was no local tissue reaction by intramuscular injection. If gastric irritation occurs after oral administration, this can be prevented by giving the drug during or after eating.
Seek medical help immediately if these serious side effects occur:
Serious allergic reactions (rash, hives, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips or tongue), anxiety, behavior changes, chest pain, confusion, disorientation, excessive pleasure, fast heartbeat, slow or irregular, hot flushes, loss of coordination, memory loss, mood or mental changes, seizures, difficulty passing stools.
Not everyone experiences the following side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have concerns about certain side effects, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

- If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.
- If you are currently taking any medicines with or without a prescription, herbal preparations or dietary supplements.
- If you have an allergy to drugs, food or other substances.
- If you have an irregular heartbeat, epilepsy or seizures, swelling of the prostate or a history of movement of the tongue, lips, face, hands or feet caused by medication
- If you are at risk for glaucoma.

Interaction
What medicines may interact with Biperiden?

Taking this drug with any of the following medicines is not recommended. Your doctor may not prescribe this medicine to you or will replace some of the drugs you are already taking.
- Potassium
Using this medication with some of the medicines below is not usually recommended, but in some cases it may be necessary. If both drugs are prescribed for you, your doctor will usually change the dosage or determine how often you should take them.
- Morphine
- Morphine Sulfate Liposome
- Oxymorphone
- Umeclidinium
Taking this medication with the drugs below may increase your risk of side effects, but in some cases, a combination of these two drugs may be the best treatment. If both drugs are prescribed for you, your doctor will usually change the dosage or determine how often you should take them.
- Betel nut
Several drugs can interact with biperiden. Tell your medical care provider if you are taking any other medications, especially:
Antihistamines (chlorpheniramine), certain narcotics (meperidine), phenothiazines (chlorpromazine), tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline), or certain antiarrhythmics (quinidine) because of the risk of side effects such as dry mouth, urinary disorders and constipation can increase.
The list may not fully state the interactions that can occur. Ask your medical care provider if biperiden can interact with other medicines you are taking. Check with your medical care provider before starting, stopping, or changing the dose of any medicine.
Can food or alcohol interact with Biperiden?
Certain drugs should not be used with meals or when eating certain foods because drug interactions can occur. Consuming alcohol or tobacco with certain drugs can also cause interactions to occur. Discuss your use of drugs with food, alcohol, or tobacco with your health care provider.
What health conditions can interact with Biperiden?
Any other health conditions you have can affect the use of this drug. Always tell your doctor if you have other health problems, especially:
- Bowel obstruction
- Glaucoma, narrow angle
- Megacolon (enlarged colon) - Should not be given to patients with this condition
- Swelling of the prostate
- Epilepsy (seizures)
- Heart rhythm disturbances - Use with caution. May worsen the condition.
Overdose
What should I do in an emergency or overdose?
In case of an emergency or overdose, contact the local emergency services provider (119) or immediately to the nearest hospital emergency department.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
If you forget a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, when it is nearing the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the usual dosing schedule. Don't double the dose.
