Many people think that bedwetting is something that only happens to children. But who would have thought that bed-wetting could happen to adults too? So why, yes, adults can wet the bed? Check out the following causes of bedwetting in adults.
What causes bedwetting in adults?
Bedwetting is normally experienced by babies or young children who cannot urinate on their own. But in fact, bedwetting can occur at any age, from infants to the elderly. It's just that many people consider bedwetting as an adult is a very shameful taboo.
Bedwetting as an adult in medical terms is called noctural enuresis, and about 1 percent of adults experience this. In people with normal bladder control, the nerves in the bladder wall send messages to the brain when the bladder is full. Then the brain sends a message back to the bladder not to empty the urine until the person is ready to urinate. But, people with nocturnal enuresis have a problem that causes them to urinate involuntarily at night.
Diseases and health conditions that can cause adults to wet the bed
Bedwetting can indicate that you drink too much before bed, can't control your urge to pee because of fear, or other things. But on the other hand, bedwetting in adults is a signal if you have certain health problems. The following are the causes of bedwetting in adults.
1. Drug effect
There are several types of drugs that actually cause bedwetting in adults, for example hypnosis. Hypnosis is a type of medication that doctors usually use to treat insomnia, sedatives, and surgical procedures. The side effect of this medicine will make people sleep soundly, thus making a person unaware of the natural urge to urinate. This is what causes adults to wet their beds while sleeping.
2. An overactive bladder
The detrusor muscle is located along the inner bladder wall. To empty the bladder, the detrusor muscles contract to squeeze urine out. Sometimes, the detrusor muscle contracts spontaneously, as a result of which the bladder becomes overactive. As many as 70-80 percent of adults who suffer nocturnal enuresis have an overactive bladder.
3. Enlarged prostate
The prostate is a small gland located at the bottom of the bladder before the urethra in the male reproductive system. This glandular growth in the medical term is calledbenign prostatic hypertrophy, or BPH. According to the US Agency for Classification of Kidney Information and Urology Information, BPH could also be the cause of bedwetting in adults. The reason is that the enlarged prostate gland will have an impact on the enlargement of the bladder muscle which causes unstable bladder function.
4. Bladder infection
Cystitis, or bladder infection, is caused by bacteria that are in the bladder. Women are more at risk of developing bladder infections than men. The reason is, the location of the woman's urethra is close to the vagina. Well, one of the symptoms of bladder infection is bed-wetting.
5. Diabetes insipidus
Diabetes insipidus is a condition that causes a person to urinate frequently and experience excessive thirst. This occurs because diabetics experience nerve damage to the bladder so that the power to control urine output weakens. Diabetes insipidus can disturb your sleep due to frequent urination, and it is undeniable that this can also cause a person to wet the bed while sleeping.
6. Sleep disturbances
In general, people will wake up when there is an urge to urinate during sleep. But people who have sleep disorders like sleep apnea this urge to urinate was even included in his dream. This makes a person unconsciously urinate while sleeping.
