A lump that appears on the body is often identified as a sign of a serious illness. Even though not all parts of the body that stand out are caused by infection, swelling, injury scars or uncontrolled growth of cells such as tumors or cysts.

The type of lump or bump that has appeared at birth is usually harmless. Benign lumps will not bleed, pus or turn dark when crushed when pressed.

The following are some of the common bumps that appear on the surface of the skin that are normally not harmful to health.

1. Mole

Moles are the most visible bumps on the skin. These tiny, flesh-looking bumps are formed from melanocytes, which are cells that produce skin pigment.

Moles are generally brown, black, pink, a color similar to the surrounding skin, or can even be bluish in color. If the melanocytes are clustered deep in the skin layer (inner) of the skin. Most of the moles are flat, but some can grow larger.

This benign lump can indeed be owned by some people from birth. The number of moles that appear is closely related to genetic factors. According to the dermatologist from The University of Queensland, professor H. Peter Soyer, some people can have moles at birth, but these bumps can also start to appear in childhood and continue to develop into their 40s.

Although in general, moles are not dangerous, it is important for you to do a medical examination to detect the presence of melanoma cancer cells.

The reason is, 25 percent of melanoma cancer cases come from moles. If it is proven that cancer cells are present, the doctor will cut or remove the part of the mole that is affected by the cancer cells.

2. Blackheads

Blackheads are a type of point-shaped protrusion that generally appears on the surface of the skin of the nose. Blackheads that are often found are of two types, namely closed comedones (whiteheads) and open blackheads (blackheads).

These bumps are actually clogged pores due to excess skin oil and dead skin cells. On blackheadsClogging occurs when the pores open so that the oil and dead skin cells in them are oxidized, causing a dark discoloration.

On the contrary on whiteheads, Blockage occurs when the pores are closed so that the inside of the pores is not exposed to air and shows white spots.

Basically, blackheads are not dangerous at all, but can interfere with or affect the aesthetics of facial skin. To clean the skin from blackheads, you can use a face wash that contains salicylic acid to remove blockages.

Avoid using blackhead plaster, which only works to lift the top of the blackhead from the surface of the skin, without stopping the blockage.

3. Milia

Milia are small white nodules that are usually found on the skin of the face. Not infrequently, many think milia is a zit due to the shape of the two are similar.

However, this benign lump is not filled with dirt or oil like blackheads, but comes from dead skin cells trapped in the skin.

Avoid pressing on the surface of the milia because it can cause irritation, inflammation, and a reddish rash on the skin. Even though milia can disappear on its own, the annoying milia can be removed by using a cream containing retinoids so that the skin is smoother.

4. Keratosis

Keratosis is usually caused by a buildup of keratin, a protein that protects skin, hair, and nails from infection and toxins. The buildup of protein causes a blockage or keratosis to form that closes the skin hair follicle openings.

Skin care for keratosis can use exfoliator products containing salicylic acid and glycolic acid, which can relieve inflammation and gradually and smooth the lumps over time.

If that doesn't work, you can see a dermatologist who will then refer you to a particular method of treatment. Treatment options include topical tretinoin for exfoliation, pulsed dye laser to treat redness, and chemical peels.

5. Skin bumps or skin tags

Lumps in the form skin tags is an overgrowth of skin that usually occurs in the neck, armpits, eyelids, top of the chest, or groin. Skin tags has a smooth and soft texture when held.

This common skin condition can be caused by rubbing the skin against clothing or jewelry. In general, skin tags are harmless as long as they do not grow rapidly or massively. However, for the sake of beauty, dermatologists can remove skin tags on the body by burning the skin using a caustic device.
