Uses of Nystatin
What drug nystatin?
Nystatin is an antifungal drug that works to treat yeast infections in the mouth or vagina. This drug works by stopping the growth of fungus.
Nystatin is available in the form of drops (suspension), tablets, and ointments. Nystatin, either in the form of drops, tablets, and ointments, should not be used to treat fungal infections of the blood.
What are the rules for using nystatin drugs?
If you are using nystatin drop, make sure you shake it first. Use the pipette (medicine dropper) provided to measure the dose carefully.
Unless the doctor recommends another way, use nystatin drop in the following ways:
- put half the dose on one side of the mouth
- hold the fluid in the mouth as long as possible, then repeat with the remaining half dose on the other side of the mouth
- gargle and swallow or spit, depending on the instructions
- avoid eating for 5-10 minutes after using this medicine.
If you are using nystatin ointment, make sure you wash your hands first. Clean the area where the ointment will be applied. Dispense the amount of ointment according to the instructions or prescription from your doctor.
Use this medication 4 times a day or as directed by your doctor. Treatment can last from a few days to several months.
Use it regularly in order to get optimal results. Don't forget to use this medication at the same time every day. The dose given will usually be adjusted to your medical condition and how your body responds to treatment.
Continue to use this medication until the prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the drug too quickly can allow the infection to continue.

How to store this drug?

What is the dose of nystatin for adults?
Nystatin drop dose for oral candidiasis in adults
Use 100,000 units, 4 times a day. Hold it over the infected area as long as possible. Continue use for up to 48 hours after recovery to avoid relapse.
Nystatin drop dose for intestinal candidiasis in adults
For intestinal candidiasis, the prescribed dose is 500,000-1,000,000 oral units 3 times a day.
For prophylaxis: 1,000,000 units a day
What is the dose of nystatin for children?

For infants and children, the dosage given is the same as for adults. Prophylaxis: 100,000 units once a day

Nystatin Side Effects
What side effects might nystatin have?
There is little chance of side effects due to nystatin, either in the form of drops, tablets, or ointments. Even so, there are some mild side effects that sometimes occur, namely:
- nausea or stomach pain
- gag
- diarrhea
Not everyone experiences the above side effects. There may also be some side effects not listed above.

What should be known before using nystatin?

What should I do in an emergency or overdose?
In case of an emergency or overdose, contact the local emergency services provider (119) or immediately to the nearest hospital emergency department.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
If you forget a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, when it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the usual dosing schedule. Don't double the dose.
